Mentor Coaching & Coach Supervision

Becoming a great coach is a journey. Don’t go it alone.

Coaches need coaches

This is true in a couple of ways.

First, there’s the practical requirement of the ICF. If you’re applying for coaching credentials for the first time or you’re renewing your current credentials, you’ll need to spend some time being mentored by a credentialed coach.

Just as important, though, is the need for you to hone your coaching approach, skills and methodologies—not to mention your outlook on yourself and your clients.

Mentor coaching and coaching supervision are not about judgment. They’re about growth. Helping other coaches develop the best possible understanding of themselves and their abilities is one of the things I cherish most about my own practice.

It all starts with you and where you are on your coaching journey. My purpose in mentor coaching and coaching supervision isn’t solely to help you fulfill your ICF requirements. It’s to help you fulfill your potential and your goals.

Individual Mentoring

In private mentoring sessions, we will create a personalized coach development plan by reviewing the ICF Core Competencies. Most of our time will be spent on your self-awareness and integration as a person and as a coach in order to demonstrate the skills of those competencies.

We’ll also review ethical considerations, such as when to refer out or end services for a client. We may also review recordings of your coaching sessions and you are encouraged to bring any frustrations, concerns or sticky situations so that we can work through them according to the competencies.

What Past Participants Are Saying

“Coach Flame inspires as a coach and coach-mentor. She has helped me open new-found awareness in coaching sessions, provided professional support during my own coach credentialing journey, and most recent she helped grow my coaching capabilities through her coach mentoring program.

I had the privilege to participate in her Fall 2021 Master Coaching Class. This was a practical, empowering, and thoughtful look at the ICF Coaching Competencies. With four other mentoring cohorts, Coach Flame led us in pursuit of understanding of the coaching competencies through relaxed, open participation group sessions.

Her mentor coaching program is practical, empowering, and she honors everyone’s contributions. I cannot think of a better experience for gaining those much-needed mentor coaching hours.”

Other FAQs

  • When you’re applying for your initial ACC credential or renewing those credentials, you need 10 hours of mentor coaching from a credentialed coach. For coaches who are renewing their credentials, up to seven of those hours can be in a group setting. As you might suspect, group sessions are a cost-effective way to fulfill your requirements and are also helpful for coaches who do not currently have many coaching clients.

  • At a minimum, we’ll spread your required hours over three months. That means you should start early so that you can gain your credentials without waiting or renew them without lapsing.

  • Not directly. Mentor coaching must focus on your coaching skills and client interactions. It can’t delve into building your practice, finding life balance or other non-coaching areas in order to count toward your ICF credential requirements. Of course, it absolutely should help your business in the long run, because a more developed coach builds a stronger reputation and referral base. Naturally, additional mentoring sessions that attend to these areas outside of the ICF Core Competencies are always an additional option.

What is the difference between Mentor Coaching and Coach Supervision?

Mentor Coaching

While there is some overlap, mentor coaching stays very close to the ICF Competencies. These sessions are structured to explore how you apply your coaching, find any blind spots and assess your coaching skills when compared to the ICF’s core competencies.

(May be applied towards mentor hours as ICF mentor coaching requirement for credentials)

Coaching Supervision

Coaching Supervision uses other observational methods to support the clarity and effectiveness of your coaching, so that you are providing the most professional, impactful experience to your client. Your Supervisor is one of the coaches you turn to when you recognize that you need coaching about what’s happening in your coaching practice.
